Who We Help
Individuals with disabilities
A disability is the lack of ability or a restriction in ability to function normally -physically or mentally.
Sport restores activity of mind and being involved in sports improves the quality of lives of people with a disability.
Sports is even more beneficial for the disabled than able-bodied. Often, sports activities require focus, attention and social interaction, and lead to sharpening many of the skills important to achieving success in school and subsequently in adulthood. Research has also shown that sports has the power to restore self-confidence, self-dignity and self-confidence in the individuals with disabilities.
The last few decades have seen increasing efforts to enable people with disabilities to enjoy these benefits.
The Build-A-Wheelchair Fund steps in to provide the necessary assistance by creating more awareness and opportunities for sports involvement for various individuals, regardless of disability in Asia.
Disability Research
Constant delving into breakthrough technology for our researchers and engineers is crucial.
Within Asia, there is a shortage of research institutions focusing on the study of disability sports discipline which is unique to the Asian Paralympic athletes’ physique and climate. In the west, there are established research-specific academies and institutions which have been spurring the growth of disability sports research.
The Build-A-Wheelchair Fund is envisioned to address this gap between Asia and our Western counterparts in disability sports studies. Our researchers need to keep up with the latest technologies to effectively develop enhanced training methodologies and sports equipment. Naturally, this will result in better and more groundbreaking developments for the projects.
The Build-A-Wheelchair Fund supports research and development to look for ways to develop cost-effective adapted sports equipment to lower the barriers of entry to sports participation.
Such commitment would benefit our sportsmen with disabilities and our community.
Education and Training
The Build-A-Wheelchair Fund helps to raise the region’s disability sport knowledge for coaches and athletes by undertaking projects which includes technical research, sport feedback equipment, competition equipment and athlete movement analysis.
We also conduct research and release of publications relating to bio-engineering, sports psychology, sports sociology, sports medicine and related topics. The fund also provides resources, training and offers workshops to train and nurture classifiers and technical officials for competitions.
