Adapted Physical Education Programme
To facilitate for social integration, it is important for special schools, mainstream schools and sports programmes to encourage inclusive coaching and sporting curriculum. In 2009, we developed an Adapted Physical Education Programme to help coaches or special physical educators understand the role and impact of physical activity for PWD (people with disabilities); communicating for results, relationship building and consultation strategies and, the preparation steps for a physical education programme for PWDs. This course was first conducted at Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) targeted at their teachers, therapists and social workers. Other organisations may include Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD), Spastic Children Association (SCA) and Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS).
Community Talks & Forums
To develop sports for the disabled community, it is important to raise the profile of sport development and its critical role in ensuring a healthy future for athletes with disabilities. Through presenting talks on disability sports as a form of rehabilitation and inclusive tool at conferences such as Enabling Week Conference by Centre for Enabled Living; Public Education Workshops held at Singapore Sports Council , Lunchtime Sharing Sessions at hospitals; Come Out & Play Programmes to be launched in other Asian cities, we engage both the medical and sports fraternities as well as the family, caregivers and members of the public to better understand about disability sports, coaching methodologies and volunteerism elements of it.
Classification
DCRC provides classification for new athletes by rendering medical and technical assessment prior to partaking in suitable sports as a form of rehabilitation tool. Only with proper classification, can these disabled individuals be properly categorised and embark in sports participation among their peers with equal disability standards. Improper classification can lead to loss of morale, self-esteem and subsequently interest in sports participation.
Training and Development
To train qualified coaches and technical officials for disability sports, we conduct accredited technical training courses by working closely with the international governing bodies of disability sports. Such efforts instill a professional and recognised pathway, and help to nurture a base of professionals for this industry.
